Subaru Tecnica International (STI) competed in the 44th Nürburgring 24-Hour Race with its SUBARU WRX STI Nürburgring Challenge 2016 car from Saturday 28 to Sunday 29 May, achieving victory in the SP3T class and finishing 20th overall.
The SUBARU WRX STI Nürburgring Challenge 2016 car driven by Carlo van Dam, Hideki Yamauchi, Marcel Lasée and Tim Schrick started the race from 2nd position in the SP3T class after the qualifier. The race was quite chaotic with a 3-hour stoppage right after the start due to bad weather including some hail, heavy rain and thunder. Despite this, the SUBARU STI team displayed collective strength with van Dam skillfully avoiding accident cars and Yamauchi taking the lead, to complete 121 laps (about 3,070km) in the 24 hours. This victory was the 2nd class win in a row following last year and the 4th since 2011 for the SUBARU STI team and SUBARU WRX STI. General Team Manager Hideharu Tatsumi commented after the race, “By bringing together all the strength of the team and with the support from the SUBARU fans, we have been able to achieve this result. However, Nürburgring has reminded me that it is not easy to conquer. I hope that our fans are happy with us coming out on top of the SP3T class. I am truly grateful for their support”.
